About

The Campsite at Curly Hill is situated on the wooded slopes of the Wharfe Valley overlooking Ilkley Moor and the famous Cow & Calf Rocks. The Campsite occupies around 4 acres and while surprisingly close to the town of Ilkley, it is a true country hideaway and a haven of adventure and fun for all ages, with the potential to see wildlife at first hand. It contains several discrete and separate camping grounds situated within the woods.

  • • Large Field - Suitable for a troop camp with several patrol tents, dining shelters and leader tents. Has an altar fireplace and water point.
  • • Maufe - Suitable for a troop camp with several patrol tents, dining shelters and leader tents. Has two altar fireplaces.
  • • D of E - Takes a patrol tent or two/three hike tents. Has an altar fireplace.
  • • Scott - Takes a patrol tent or two/three hike tents. Has an altar fireplace and water point.
  • • Sunrise - Takes a patrol tent or two/three hike tents. Has an altar fireplace and water point.
  • • Back of Beyond - Quiet hideaway at bottom of site. Has altar fireplace and suitable for x1 large tent.
  • • On site car park for around 15 vehicles. Additional street parking available nearby.

Campsite Details

The space in front of the building is generally kept clear for sports, games and other activities. Bookings can be taken from multiple groups but total numbers are limited to prevent overcrowding.
Your Duty Warden will endeavour to match your preference for a particular site but this will depend on ground conditions at the time of your visit. Should it be desired, it is possible to book exclusive use of the whole Site, including the Centre– see ‘Fees’ for more detail.
The maximum number of campers is set at 75.

Disabled Visitors

Consideration has been given to accommodating disabled visitors as far as possible however the site does include some steep slopes and rough ground which could cause difficulty for wheelchair users or people with mobility issues. Campsite facilities include an accessible 'wet-room' with disabled friendly washbasin, toilet and shower.

Facilities Summary

Amenities Block: There is a modern heated Amenities Block, providing toilets, hot and cold washing and shower (x4) facilities for both male and female campers. The block also contains an accessible compliant wet-room, providing full washing, shower and toilet facilities for a disabled person.
Pot Wash: A covered area with sinks and hot & cold water is provided alongside the Amenities Block.
Wood Fires: Altar fires are on each site for open fires. Depending on availability a stock of wood may be at hand though visitors may wish to bring their own supplies. The camp-site has a camp fire circle, which doubles for that quiet period of reflection or as a centre for group meetings.
Cooking Stoves All sites have level hard standing for use with cooking stoves.
Water As well as the Amenities Block there are water points situated at Field, Scott & Sunrise sites.
Charcoal BBQ A large Charcoal BBQ, please bring charcoal and clean after use.

In 2019-2020, serveral improvements were made, including new toilet facilities improved paths and drainage and new seating for campfire circle. The Telegraph & Argus

Site Rules

A Duty Warden is on call for your stay - but not necessarily on site - we like you to feel ‘free’ to enjoy your stay.
The rules of the Centre are simple: leave the Campsite as you would wish to find it. Please - no grease pits or fire areas to be dug. Keep disposable BBQs off grassed areas.
Noise: Please be aware that we do have some close neighbours and we would be grateful if noise could be kept to an absolute minimum between 23:00 and 07:00 hours during your stay.

We operate a policy of single occupancy for the Centre so visitors have exclusive use of the whole building for their stay. The Campsite operates with its own shared facilities and is hired separately but for an additional fee visitors may wish to book exclusive use of the full site – see ‘fees’ for full details.
